Seasonal Bird Watching

Summer (November - February)

Summer brings numerous migratory species to Welgevonden, including European Bee-eaters, Amur Falcons, and various cuckoo species. The lush vegetation and abundance of insects during this period create ideal conditions for bird watching, with over 250 species possible during a summer visit. This is also breeding season for many resident birds, offering opportunities to observe nesting behavior and fledglings.

Autumn (March - May)

As migratory birds prepare to depart, autumn offers excellent viewing opportunities. The thinning vegetation improves visibility, making it easier to spot birds. This transitional period is particularly good for photography as birds are often in prime plumage. Watch for congregations of certain species preparing for migration.

Winter (June - August)

The dry winter months offer excellent bird watching with reduced vegetation making birds easier to spot. Though there are fewer species overall, this is the best time to observe resident birds like raptors and ground hornbills. Water sources become magnets for bird activity, creating concentrated viewing opportunities. The clear winter skies provide excellent light for bird photography.

Spring (September - October)

Spring heralds the return of migratory species and the beginning of the breeding season. Many birds display their most vibrant breeding plumage and engage in courtship behaviors during this time. The first spring rains transform the landscape, bringing new growth and increased insect activity that attracts various bird species. This is an excellent time to observe nesting activities and territorial displays.

Essential Gear for Bird Watching

Quality binoculars (8x42 or 10x42 recommended)

Camera with telephoto lens

Neutral-colored clothing

Hat and sun protection

Notebook for recording sightings
