Frequently Asked Questions

How many game drives are included in a typical stay?

Our standard package includes two game activities per day - typically a morning and afternoon/evening game drive. For guests staying three nights or more, we recommend including at least one bush walk to experience the wilderness from a different perspective.

What is the best time of year for game viewing?

Welgevonden offers excellent game viewing year-round. The dry winter months (May to September) are typically considered optimal as vegetation is sparse and animals concentrate around water sources. However, the summer months bring lush landscapes, newborn animals, and spectacular bird watching opportunities.

Are children allowed on game drives and bush walks?

Children of all ages are welcome on our game drives, though we recommend children under 6 join private family drives. For safety reasons, bush walks are restricted to guests 16 years and older. Our rangers are experienced in creating engaging experiences for younger wildlife enthusiasts during game drives.

What should I bring on game viewing activities?

We recommend bringing a camera, binoculars, sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses), and a light jacket or sweater (even in summer as early mornings and evenings can be cool). For night drives, warmer clothing is advisable. We provide blankets and ponchos for your comfort during cooler periods.

What are the chances of seeing the Big 5?

Welgevonden is home to all of the Big 5 (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo). During a typical 3-night stay with 5-6 game drives, guests have an excellent chance of seeing most if not all of these iconic species. However, wildlife sightings are never guaranteed as animals roam freely in their natural habitat.

Our Commitment to Conservation

All game viewing activities at Sekala are conducted with the utmost respect for wildlife and their natural behaviors. We strictly adhere to Welgevonden Game Reserve's conservation guidelines, ensuring minimal impact on the ecosystem while providing authentic wildlife encounters. By choosing Sekala, you're contributing to ongoing conservation efforts that help protect these magnificent species for generations to come.
