Self-driving to Welgevonden Game Reserve is straightforward, with good roads for the entire journey. From Johannesburg or Pretoria, you'll travel north through scenic landscapes before reaching the reserve.
From Johannesburg/Pretoria, take the N1 highway North towards Polokwane
Take the Modimolle/Nylstroom off-ramp (R33)
At Vaalwater, straight through the four-way stop onto the R517 towards Lephalale
Continue for approximately 23km on the R517. You will see Welgevonden East Gate on your right - continue past this gate as it's not the main entrance.
Turn left at the Welgevonden Game Reserve Main Gate signpost (approximately 2km after passing the East Gate)
The entrance to the Main Gate is straight off the main road
A normal sedan vehicle is suitable for reaching the main gate
4x4 vehicles are not required for access to the main gate
The entrance to the main gate is directly off the main road with no dirt road section
Private vehicles are not permitted inside Welgevonden Game Reserve
Secure parking is available at the main gate with 24-hour security
Our ranger will collect you from the main gate in one of our game viewing vehicles
Collection time from the main gate is at 1:00 PM unless prior arrangements have been made
The transfer from the main gate to the lodge takes approximately 45 minutes
This transfer serves as an additional game drive experience (separate from your scheduled morning and evening game drives), with potential wildlife sightings along the way
Late arrivals should be arranged in advance, as additional transfer fees may apply
