Safari Lodge Etiquette

Making the Most of Your Safari Experience

At Sekala Private Game Lodge, we strive to create a harmonious environment where all guests can enjoy the tranquility of the bush and have an exceptional safari experience. Following these simple etiquette guidelines ensures that everyone, including the wildlife, benefits from a respectful and considerate atmosphere.

Tranquil morning at Sekala Private Game Lodge

Our etiquette recommendations are designed to enhance your safari experience while preserving the natural environment and ensuring the comfort of fellow guests. These guidelines reflect the values of responsible tourism and wildlife conservation that are at the heart of everything we do at Sekala.

General Lodge Etiquette

The lodge is designed to provide a peaceful retreat in nature. These general guidelines help maintain the tranquil atmosphere that our guests value.

Noise Consideration

Please keep noise levels to a minimum, especially during early mornings, late evenings, and during siesta time (typically between 1:00 PM and 3:30 PM). This allows all guests to enjoy the natural sounds of the bush and rest between activities.

Smoking Policy

Smoking is only permitted in designated outdoor areas. Please dispose of cigarette butts responsibly in the provided ashtrays. Smoking is strictly prohibited in rooms, enclosed public areas, and on game vehicles due to fire hazards.

Mobile Devices

Please keep mobile phones on silent mode in public areas and during game drives. If you need to make or receive calls, please do so in the privacy of your room to avoid disturbing other guests' wilderness experience.

Energy Conservation

Please help us conserve energy by turning off lights, air conditioning, and electrical appliances when not in use. Water is a precious resource in the bush, so we appreciate mindful usage during your stay.

Game Drive Etiquette

Game drives are the highlight of any safari experience. Following these guidelines ensures enjoyable and successful wildlife viewing for everyone.

01

Punctuality

Please be ready at the meeting point 5-10 minutes before scheduled departure times. Game drives operate on strict schedules to maximize wildlife viewing opportunities, and delays affect all guests in the vehicle.

02

Wildlife Viewing

Keep your voice low during wildlife sightings. Sudden movements and loud noises can disturb animals and cause them to flee. Follow your ranger's instructions at all times, especially regarding safety protocols.

03

Photography

Avoid using flash photography, especially at night, as it can distress animals. Be considerate of other photographers in the vehicle by taking turns and not monopolizing prime viewing positions.

04

Sighting Etiquette

At exceptional sightings, rangers communicate with each other to manage vehicle numbers. Please respect the time limits at popular sightings to allow other guests the opportunity to view the animals.

05

Safety First

Always remain seated in the game vehicle unless your ranger explicitly permits you to stand or exit. Never attempt to approach wildlife on foot without proper supervision.

Dining Etiquette

Meals at Sekala are social occasions where guests often share their day's experiences. Our dining etiquette helps create a welcoming atmosphere for all.

Meal Times

Please observe the meal times communicated by lodge staff. If you have special dietary requirements or will miss a scheduled meal due to activities, kindly inform us in advance.

Dress Code

Smart casual attire is appropriate for dinner. While formal wear is not required, we ask that guests do not wear safari gear or swimming attire in the dining area during evening meals.

Communal Dining

Some meals may be served at communal tables to encourage guest interaction. If you prefer private dining, please let our staff know in advance when possible.

Bush Dinners

Special bush dinners are arranged weather permitting. These are highlight experiences and follow the same etiquette principles as lodge-based dining.

Respect for Wildlife & Environment

As a conservation-focused lodge, we emphasize respectful interaction with the natural environment and its inhabitants.

Wildlife conservation at Welgevonden Game Reserve

Never feed or attempt to touch wild animals, even those that appear tame. This is dangerous for both you and the animals.

Do not remove any plant material, stones, or other natural items from the reserve as souvenirs.

Dispose of all waste in designated bins. Even biodegradable items like fruit peels should not be thrown into the bush.

Our rangers follow strict off-road driving protocols to minimize impact. Please respect their decisions about vehicle positioning.

Minimize light pollution at night by drawing curtains and keeping external lights to a minimum to avoid disrupting nocturnal animals.

By observing these etiquette guidelines, you contribute to conservation efforts and help us maintain Sekala as a premier safari destination where both wildlife and guests can thrive. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
