Our team is always available to assist with any financial matters during your stay, including arranging currency exchange, processing credit card payments, or advising on tipping practices. This guide provides essential information to help you prepare for your visit to Sekala and travel within South Africa.

South African Currency

The official currency of South Africa is the South African Rand (ZAR), denoted by the symbol R. Understanding the currency will help you navigate financial transactions during your stay.

Rand (ZAR) Denominations

Banknotes: R10, R20, R50, R100, R200

Coins: R1, R2, R5, and smaller denominations of 10c, 20c, and 50c

South African banknotes feature the face of Nelson Mandela on the front and different wildlife scenes representing the "Big Five" animals on the reverse.

Exchange Rates

Exchange rates fluctuate daily. For the most current rates, we recommend checking reliable financial websites or contacting your bank before travel.

As a general reference, approximate exchange rates (subject to change):

  • 1 USD ≈ R15-18
  • 1 EUR ≈ R16-19
  • 1 GBP ≈ R19-22

Banking & ATMs

South Africa has a sophisticated banking network, though services are more limited in remote areas such as game reserves. It's advisable to handle most of your banking needs before arriving at the lodge.

Credit & Debit Cards

Major credit cards (Visa and MasterCard) are widely accepted throughout South Africa, including at Sekala Private Game Lodge. American Express and Diners Club have more limited acceptance.

We recommend notifying your bank of your travel plans before departure to prevent your cards from being flagged for suspicious international activity.

Cash & Currency Exchange

While credit cards are convenient, having some cash on hand is recommended for small purchases, local markets, or tipping.

Currency exchange services are available at international airports, major banks, and some hotels in larger cities. Rates are typically more favorable at banks than at hotels or airports.

Note that the lodge has limited cash exchange facilities, so we recommend exchanging currency before arrival.

ATMs

ATMs are widely available in cities and towns throughout South Africa. The nearest ATMs to Sekala are located in Vaalwater, approximately 35 minutes from the reserve gate.

Most international debit cards work at South African ATMs, though foreign transaction fees may apply. Daily withdrawal limits typically range from R2,000 to R3,000.

Banking Security

As with travel anywhere, exercise normal precautions with financial transactions. Use ATMs located in secure areas such as inside banks or shopping centers.

Keep a record of your credit card numbers and the international contact numbers for your bank in case you need to report lost or stolen cards.

Lodge Payments & Tipping

Lodge Payment Policies

Accepted Payment Methods

Sekala accepts the following payment methods for accommodation and additional services:

  • Credit Cards: Visa and MasterCard
  • Debit Cards (with credit card functionality)
  • EFT (Electronic Fund Transfer) - for advance payments only
  • Cash (South African Rand)

Settling Your Account

While most accommodation costs are prepaid, additional expenses such as spa treatments, premium beverages, curio shop purchases, and special activities can be settled at the end of your stay.

We prepare a detailed invoice of all charges, which you can review before departure. For your convenience, we recommend settling your account the evening before departure.

Tipping Guidelines

Tipping is customary in South Africa's hospitality industry but is always at your discretion based on the service received. For your reference, here are common tipping practices:

Rangers/Guides R200-300 per guest per day
Butlers/Waitstaff R150-200 per guest per day
Housekeeping R100-150 per guest per day
Spa Therapists 10-15% of treatment cost
Transfer Drivers R50-100 per transfer

Tipping Methods:

  • Cash tips in South African Rand are preferred and can be given directly to staff members or placed in the tip box at reception.
  • If you prefer, gratuities can be added to your final bill and distributed to the team.
  • Some guests prefer to tip specific staff members who made their stay special, while others contribute to a general staff tip pool.
