Waterberg Climate & Weather

Climate Overview

The Waterberg region enjoys a moderate climate that makes it an excellent year-round safari destination. Situated at a higher altitude than many other South African game reserves, the Waterberg experiences milder temperatures and lower humidity, creating comfortable conditions for wildlife viewing throughout the year.

Welgevonden Game Reserve, where Sekala is located, benefits from this pleasant climate, with clear, sunny days being the norm. Dramatic afternoon thunderstorms can occur during summer months, typically clearing quickly and leaving behind refreshed landscapes. The region is classified as a summer rainfall area with a dry winter season.

Seasonal Weather Patterns

Each season in the Waterberg offers a different safari experience. Understanding the seasonal patterns will help you plan your visit and pack appropriately.

Summer (November - February)

Temperature: 18°C - 32°C (64°F - 90°F)
Rainfall: Highest of the year (afternoon thunderstorms)
Landscape: Lush and green with abundant water

Summer brings warm days and mild nights with occasional afternoon thunderstorms. The landscape transforms to vibrant green, and many animals give birth during this season. Bird-watching is exceptional with numerous migratory species present.

Autumn (March - April)

Temperature: 15°C - 29°C (59°F - 84°F)
Rainfall: Decreasing, occasional light showers
Landscape: Transitioning from green to golden

Autumn offers pleasant, mild weather with decreasing rainfall. The landscape begins to transition from lush green to golden hues. Wildlife viewing improves as vegetation thins slightly and animals gather around remaining water sources.

Winter (May - August)

Temperature: 4°C - 23°C (39°F - 73°F)
Rainfall: Minimal, dry conditions prevail
Landscape: Dry with sparse vegetation

Winter brings cool nights and mild, sunny days with almost no rainfall. The dry conditions and sparse vegetation make this an excellent time for game viewing, as animals concentrate around water sources and are more visible in the thinned bush.

Spring (September - October)

Temperature: 14°C - 28°C (57°F - 82°F)
Rainfall: Beginning of rainy season, occasional showers
Landscape: New growth beginning, some flowering

Spring sees warming temperatures and the first seasonal rains. The landscape begins to transform with new growth and some trees flowering. Game viewing remains excellent as animals are still concentrated around limited water sources before the rains fully arrive.

Weather Considerations & Tips

Temperature Fluctuations

Be prepared for significant temperature differences between early mornings and midday, particularly in winter when morning game drives can be quite chilly but afternoons pleasant and warm.

Thunderstorms

Summer thunderstorms in the Waterberg can be spectacular but brief. They typically occur in the late afternoon and clear quickly. Our game drive vehicles have rain protection, but a light rain jacket is recommended in summer.

Sun Protection

The African sun is intense year-round, even on cloudy days. Always use sun protection, wear a hat, and consider long sleeves even in summer to protect from UV exposure during outdoor activities.

Wind Conditions

Occasional strong winds can occur, particularly during seasonal changes. A light windbreaker can be useful, and securing loose items on game drive vehicles is recommended.
